Betting on the Michigan State Spartans (-3)
Record: 8-0 Overall / 5-0 Conference
The Spartans stunned their chief rivals Michigan Wolverines at home last Saturday, erasing a significant halftime deficit and completing the comeback in a 37-33 victory. Michigan was no. 2 nationally in scoring defense at the start of that game but exited ninth, thanks in large part to running back Kenneth Walker crushing the Wolverines for 197 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Beating a stout defense in that manner is a big booster for the confidence of the Spartans, who could continue to ride on Walker while he’s still hot against Purdue, which didn’t do a fine job defensively in Week 9, giving up 399 total yards to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, including 130 on the ground.
Michigan State, which is averaging 33.6 points, is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Purdue Boilermakers (+3)
Record: 5-3 Overall / 3-2 Conference
Purdue’s recent form has been an oscillation between wins and losses. The Boilermakers have not had a winning streak nor a losing skid over their past six games. In their latest outing, the Boilermakers recorded a 28-23 road win over Nebraska, as quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns on 34/45 completions. That was enough for the Boilermakers to score an upset victory on the road against Nebraska, and up ahead them is a much bigger challenge of taking down Michigan State at home. Purdue has been among the best performers against the spread as underdogs over the last couple of years. In fact, the Boilermakers are 7-3 against the spread as underdogs in their last 10 games, dating back to November 2019. Purdue will look to stunt the Spartans’ offense with its excellent third-down defense, allowing just 33.64 percent of opponents to convert on third downs — fourth-best in the Big Ten.
Writer’s Prediction
Michigan State wins, 30-20.
