Top Five Heisman Trophy Hopefuls

Leonard Fournette, Running Back (LSU)

Leonard Fournette’s hype train is still going full speed ahead. The stud running back from LSU just had his most unproductive game of the season (to say the least), rushing for 158 yards on 20 carries, including an 87-yard touchdown run. But his season-low was still good enough to make him the fastest running back to reach 1,000 yards in a season at LSU.

A big game and a huge, kind deed should have the Heisman Trophy Selection Committee’s attention. Fournette’s the runaway favorite to win the trophy at -280.

Seth Russell, Quarterback (Baylor)

If you believe that the Heisman Trophy is a quarterback’s award, then No. 2 Baylor’s Seth Russell may be your man. Russell leads the nation in passing touchdowns (22) and passer efficiency (210.7), and he’s yet to have a game with less than three touchdowns this season.

The Bears even have a manageable schedule the next few weeks, with back-to-back home games against West Virginia and Iowa State before going on the road to take on Kansas State. Catch Russell at a solid price while you can; he’s currently at +700 to win the Heisman Trophy.

Trevone Boykin, Quarterback (TCU)

Russell is an excellent quarterback and all, but his Big 12 rival in No. 3 TCU’s Trevone Boykin could give him a run for his money. Boykin has kept the Horned Frogs undefeated with big plays using his arm and his legs, most evident in TCU’s come-from-behind 52-45 win over Kansas State.

Boykin scrambled 14 yards for a score to get TCU to narrow the game’s defecit to 42-37 with 7:55 remaining in the fourth quarter in Week 6. He then added a 69-yard touchdown dash in TCU’s next drive for the go ahead-score and also completed a throw for a two-point conversion. But Boykin wasn’t done; he then completed a 55-yard catch-and-run touchdown to senior receiver Josh Doctson to finally seal the game.

A quarterback with big play ability with both in the air and on the ground should impress the selection committee. Boykin is +1,000 to win the Heisman Trophy.

Ezekiel Elliott, Running Back (Ohio State)

With No. 1 Ohio State currently embroiled in a quarterback situation—Cardale Jones starts drives, while J.T. Barrett finishes them off in the red-zone—running back Ezekiel Elliott has had plenty of chances to shine in the Buckeyes’ backfield this season. However, Elliot hasn’t particularly put up monster numbers like his three-straight 200-yarders in helping Ohio State capture the national title last season.

Elliott has been pretty tame thus far, rushing for less than 125 yards in five of six games. But he did break out against Indiana on October 3, rushing for a season-high 274 yards and three scores on 23 carries. That may have been enough to keep the bookies sold on keeping Elliott at +1,000 to still win the Heisman Trophy.

Deshaun Watson, Quarterback (Clemson)

Deshaun Watson

No. 5 Clemson’s quarterback Deshaun Watson doesn’t put up monster numbers, with just 990 yards passing and 11 touchdowns this season. But he does have one of the best completion percentages in the nation, ranking 11th overall with his 69 percent completion rate. Watson will need a signature win to boost his standing as a Heisman Trophy contender, though, and his chance to do so may be in Week 10 against the No. 11 Florida State Seminoles. As of the moement, Watson is  priced at +2,000 to win the Heisman Trophy.
