Betting on the New England Patriots (+5.5)
Regular Season Record: 3-4
The Patriots won’t have a bye until Week 14, but they looked like they just had one in Week 7, as they scored a relaxed 54-13 win over the New York Jets at home. Sure, that’s just a game against the Jets, but no other team has scored more than 27 points against New York outside of New England. Mac Jones passed for 307 yards and two touchdowns without an interception on 24/36 completions, while Damian Harris rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. JJ Taylor added some garbage-time yards to go with his pair of rushing scores. The Chargers won’t be treated like that by New England’s offense but they have to watch out for the Patriots’ armada of running backs. Harris, Taylor, and Brandon Bolden form a backfield trio that can take advantage of LA’s run defense that’s worst in the NFL with 162.5 rushing yards allowed and also last with 5.4 yards surrendered per carry.
The under is 6-1 in the Patriots’ last seven games as the underdog.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (-5.5)
Regular Season Record: 4-2
The Chargers are coming off a bye, which came very timely as they entered that break following a 34-6 loss on the road to the Baltimore Ravens. Los Angeles’ paltry scoring output surprised a lot of people, given the success the Chargers are having in general with Justin Herbert under center. But Herbert passed for just 195 yards and a touchdown with an interception on 22/39 completions against the Ravens. The run game of the Chargers was also barely existent in that game, with the team coming with only 26 rushing yards on 12 carries. Then again, the Chargers needed to pass the ball more after trailing big early. The Chargers lost the possession time battle by a huge margin of nearly 17 minutes, as they went just 3/12 on third downs. Still, LA is a highly capable offensive team. It is averaging 24.7 points and 377.5 total yards per game. It’s also converting 45 percent of its third downs.’
The Chargers are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games as a favorite.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chargers win, 26-20.
