Betting on the New Orleans Pelicans (TBA)
Another night, another heartbreaking loss for the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Pelicans lost 112-111 in overtime at home to the Phoenix Suns Friday to stay winless through their first six games of the 2016-17 campaign. They squandered another great performance from Anthony Davis, who notched his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
There appears to be no other help from Davis’ supporting cast at all, with Terrence Jones being the only other standout in the loss for New Orleans. Jones, who started in place of the suspended Dante Cunningham, was the team’s next best option as he finished with 19 points on 9-of 14 shooting to go with seven rebounds and six assists.
It was the Pelicans’ rebounding and free-throw shooting, though, that did them in again. They shot just 53.6 percent from the line against Phoenix, which ultimately helped the visiting team survive the contest. The Pels were also out-rebounded by the Suns, 66-55, and must do a better job of cleaning up missed shots. They’re ranked 20th this season with just 42.8 rebounds per game, and must win the battle of the boards for certain this Monday night against the Warriors, who are a mere 18th place themselves in that category.
Then again, we may have to wait another game for the Pelicans to finally nab their first ‘W’. They’ve lost five-straight on the road dating back to the previous season (1-4 ATS), and a dreaded visit to Oracle Arena versus a smarting Dubs team is the last thing that they need.
Betting on the Golden State Warriors (TBA)
After an emotional win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, the Golden State Warriors could not keep their momentum going on Friday night’s back-to-back as they were embarrassed by the scrappy Los Angeles Lakers, 117-97. They were uncharacteristically off to a slow start in that game, having scored a season-low 15 points in the first quarter and never having been able to claw out of that funk.
We might have witnessed Stephen Curry’s worst performance in recent memory that evening. The reigning two-time MVP went an ice-cold 0-for-10 from the three-point line to snap his 196-game streak of made three’s (counting the postseason). And it wasn’t only Curry who couldn’t find his shot downtown, as fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson went just 2-for-10 on Friday from beyond the arc. Thompson, by the way, has made just 19.6 percent of his three-point shots this season.
Even worse, the Warriors were out-rebounded by the Lakers’ young frontcourt, 56-49 – 16-9 on the offensive glass. They also committed a season-high 20 turnovers in the loss. It’s a good thing Golden State doesn’t have to visit the middling Lakers every week, as the team has lost to them at Los Angeles at least once in each of the three seasons to date.
A trip back to the Bay Area to face New Orleans will surely get the Dubs back in a cheerier mood, as they’ve won all nine of their last home stands against the Pelicans (6-3 ATS). Furthermore, all three of their last wins over the Pels during that span resulted in double-digit victories.
Writer’s Prediction
The Warriors take their recent frustrations out on the Pelicans, 119-91.
