Betting on the New Orleans Saints (+3)
Regular Season Record: 1-1
Just when the Saints thought they were going somewhere with Jameis Winston after their huge 38-3 win in Week 1 at home against the Green Bay Packers, the former Florida State Seminoles imploded mightily in the following game. Winston got shut down by the Carolina Panthers in the Saints 26-7 road loss in Wee k2. He went just 11/22 for 111 passing yards and two interceptions. His only score was a touchdown run in the fourth quarter when the Saints were playing catch-up. The Saints, however, were missing nine starters and assistant coaches in Week 2, which partly explains why the team was a mess on the field. At least a few of those absentees should be back for Week 3, so better on-field product can be expected of the Saints against the Patriots. Remember, this is still the same team that embarrassed the Green Bay Packers back in Week 1. That version of the Saints could show up any time.
The Saints are 8-0-1 against the spread in their last nine games after posting fewer than 250 total yards in their last outing.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-3)
Regular Season Record: 1-1
The Patriots have Zach Wilson quite a rookie hazing. In New England’s 25-6 road win in Week 2 over the New York Jets, the Pats’ defense came away with four interceptions and four sacks. There was barely anything the Jets could do in trying to put together meaningful drives. And now, the Patriots’ secondary awaits for Jameis Winston to make mistakes and pounce on them just like they always do against opposing quarterbacks. The Patriots’ defense now has five interceptions and six sacks after just two games. Granted that Wilson was more of a sitting duck because of his inexperience, the Patriots are still a huge threat defensively against the Saints who could unravel on any game, depending on which version of Winston show up. New England is allowing opponents to convert just 58.3 percent of their passes, so far this season.
The under is 5-0 in the Patriots’ last five games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
The Saints win, 21-17.
