Betting on the New York Giants (3-2)
It was a milestone night for the New York Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning. With a game-winning 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Larry Donnell over two 49ers defenders, Manning became the winningest quarterback in team history with 102 victories in the 30-27 thriller on Sunday night.
[sc:NFL240banner ]Nothing seemed to stop the Giants’ franchise quarterback. Manning overcame a second quarter interception to complete 41 of 54 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns. He added an 11-yard scramble to start off the game-winning drive and was not sacked the entire game. Manning could be up for another big game in Week 6, as Philadelphia is among the league’s worst in passing defense, allowing 279.6 yards per game.
Manning will need some of his receivers to keep hot to help him carve out the Eagles’ secondary. Odell Beckham Jr. injured his hamstring against the 49ers, but managed to return to finish off the game. The second-year wide receiver finished with seven catches for 121 yards and a score. Pass-catching running back Shane Vereen caught another one of Manning’s scoring passes to finish with eight catches on 86 yards.
Having the Giants’ passing game going early and often is crucial to keep the Giants afloat. The running game hasn’t been getting much on the ground with feature running back Rashad Jennings failing to reach the 50-yard mark since his solid Week 1 outing. The Giants also don’t have a very good defense to keep their opponents from picking up plenty of yardage. New York has allowed 384.8 total yards of offense per game, 27th in the league.
The Giants are 3-7 SU/ATS in their last 10 games against Philadelphia.
Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles (2-3)
Trailing 7-0 after the first quarter of their Sunday showdown with the New Orleans Saints, the Philadelphia Eagles showed that they were done biting dust. The Eagles rallied to outscore New Orleans 39-10 in the final three quarters for much-needed win to get them to a 2-3 record with three other teams in the NFC East.
Sam Bradford overcame two red-zone interceptions as he finished with 33 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles’ two main running backs in Ryan Mathews and DeMarco Murray each had rushing scores as well. Mathews finished with 73 yards on eight carries, while Murray had 83 yards on 20 carries.
Even though Mathews and Murray have shown that they have the ability to go on big runs in coach Chip Kelly’s system, they may not gain much steam against New York next Monday night. The Giants have one of the best rushing defenses in the league, allowing just 80.6 yards per game this season (second in the NFL). They’re also allowing a league-low 3.5 yards per carry to opposing running backs.
If Mathews and Murray struggle, then the Eagles’ receiving corps will need to step up. Josh Huff caught 4 of 5 targets for a team-high 78 yards and a score against New Orleans after being targeted just six times in the past three games he’s played. Tight end Zach Ertz gave Bradford a safety valve on Sunday as well, catching 5 of 6 for 60 yards. Meanwhile, Brent Celek caught all three passes coming his way for 44 yards and a score.
Considering Bradford can make one pass after another, the Eagles could have a big day through the air against New York’s league-worst secondary (304.2 passing yards allowed per game).
And while the Eagles themselves have allowed plenty of yardage through the air this season, they have, on the other hand, forced some very timely turnovers. Philadelphia has the sixth-most interceptions in the league this season (six), and have a solid cornerback to shadow the Giants’ stadout wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. Walter Thurmond could be a shutdown corner in the making with his team-high three interceptions this year, just one shy of a league-high four picks each by Carolina’s Josh Norman and Oakland’s Charles Woodson.
The Eagles are 5-3 ATS in their last eight games at Lincoln Financial Field.
