Washington Redskins vs New York Giants Predictions, Picks, Odds and Betting Preview – NFL Week 17 2017

Back in November 23, the Redskins beat the Giants 20-10 at FedEx Field, and have claimed victory in three out of the last four games against their rival. Another check in the plus column for the Redskins in Week 17, is that they are 12-5 ATS against teams with losing records. The Giants, with a  dismal 2-13 record certainly fit the bill. It is also worth noting that the New York Giants are 2-7 against the spread in their last nine games at home when playing a team with a losing road record (and Washington fits that bill).

Washington beat Denver in Week 16 in another meaningless game between two teams long out of the playoff race. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdowns and gave his team a chance to finish .500 with eight wins, despite all of the problems this season. The Redskins will play hard. Jay Gruden says his team is hopeful of finishing with eight wins so there shouldn’t be any worries about a less than sufficient effort. But then the fun starts in the offseason There is speculation that the Redskins could fire Jay Gruden after missing the playoffs for the second season in a row. It doesn’t feel like he had a bad season this year, considering the decimation on the offensive line, the Terrell Pryor failure and the overall lack of a skill plays to surround Kirk Cousins.

A lot of those around the league think the Redskins would be wrong to cut Gruden loose, and that another team would quickly be a suitor if he were to hit the open market. There will certainly be enough vacancies around the league after Black Monday. Then there’s Kirk Cousins, who is a free agent at the end of the season after playing the last two on the franchise tag. His numbers don’t reflect how well he’s played this season. He’s toughed out another full year, without much talent around him and not much time to throw.

Like Gruden, Cousins is under-appreciated and is probably better than anybody the ‘Skins would get to replace them. But it feels like change could be on the way in Washington, as it often is, and that would mean at least moving on from one of those two pillars.

Betting on the New York Giants (2-13)

Point Spread: (+3.5)

So while the Redskins have motivation to go out and win this game, the Giants have much of the opposite. New York is sitting in the two slot for next summer’s NFL Draft, after Cleveland. The Giants are going to have to assess the quarterback position after all the drama surrounding Eli Manning this season. First, they have to get a coach and most around the team believe they will search the outside to bring someone in, instead of promoting within.

Then they have to go about assessing quarterback options, options that will most likely come from the draft. There are two quarterbacks right at the top of the board from California, one USC, one UCLA. Most believe the Giants will grab one of those guys, perhaps whoever Cleveland passes on. Of course, that plan is nixed if they win this week and the Colts end up getting the second pick. With Andrew Luck’s health complications, Indianapolis could be in the market for an arm too.

So Giants fans know what is at stake. It can’t be nice to play in front of a home crowd that truly doesn’t want you to win the game. But the last terrible thing that can happen to the Giants this season would be messing this up with a meaningless win.

Writer’s Prediction

The New York Giants recently suspended one of their cornerbacks as this will be huge for the Washington Redskins. Cousins has an amazing day to end his season with the Redskins in the 2017 year.  Pick: Washington (-3.0)
