Betting on the New York Yankees (23-13)
Tuesday night’s three-game series opener with the Royals was all Yankees, as they reigned for much of the contest, 7-1. They went 13-for-40 on the plate, with Chris Carter recording three hits, one homer, and two RBIs. The win was very much needed for the recently-slumping Yanks, who only had their second victory in six games.
For Carter, a team newbie who came off a season where he tallied a league-best 41 homers, last night was undoubtedly his best game with the club. Thus, this will be a great time to start expecting a more productive play from him. If he is able to consistently join Aaron Judge, Starlin Castro, and Chase Headley in providing offense, there’s a great chance that the Yankees will hold on to their division lead until the end of the regular season.
Michael Pineda, meanwhile, will get the start for the game. He’s 3-2 with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts this season. The 50 total strikeouts on the year ranks him within the top 20 in the league. Additionally, the Royals’ batters are only batting a decent-at-best .273 against him all-time.
Betting on the Kansas City Royals (16-22)
If not for the fight they tried to show at the latter stages of last night’s game, which was too late, it could’ve easily been a shutout. The Royals only had eight hits overall (.235), and gave up 13 on the other end.
Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, and Salvador Perez, who are among the most consistent batters on the team, each had terrible night (1-for-12 collectively), which might’ve been long overdue.
Although it was an underwhelming showing and a very frustrating loss, since it halted their four-game winning streak, the good news is that the next two games are still at home. They still have a lot of chances to regain their rhythm and we should – at the very least – see improvement.
Further, it isn’t likely that Kansas City’s efficient trio on offense will have such woeful performance again. There’s just no way but up after that.
As for the defense, the Royals are hoping that Wednesday’s starter, Jason Vargas (5-1. 1.01 ERA), can continue his great play. His last start had him pitching for seven scoreless innings and retiring four batters, while only surrendering three hits.
