After ending the first half of the season on a disastrous 2-6 slump, the Yankees started the second half with a split of their four-game series against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees dropped back down to third in the AL East, 3.5 games back of the division-leading Red Sox.

The Yankees still haven’t announced their starter for tonight’s matchup against the Twins as of this writing. Either way, it won’t be one of their better starters taking the mound after Luis Severino, CC Sabathia, and Masahiro Tanaka all went during the last couple days against Boston.

With the pitching a big question mark, the Yankees will need their offense to get back on track. The second-ranked offense in the AL was handed a rare shutout in the second half of yesterday’s double-header against the Red Sox.

Rookie sensation Aaron Judge has not been at his best since winning the home run derby during the break. The top AL MVP candidate went just 1-of-18 during the four-game Red Sox series.

Betting on the Minnesota Twins (46-45)

The Minnesota Twins didn’t have the greatest start to the second half of their season as they dropped two of three to the Houston Astros. They’re now 1-4 in their last five games dating back to the end of the first half. Offense has been hard to come by for the Twins, who have scored just 18 runs in those five games.

Starter Adalberto Mejia would obviously prefer to get some support from his offense in his first career meeting against the Yankees. The 24-year-old lefty has been fairly average this season with a 4-4 record and a 4.43 ERA in 13 starts. He’s coming off a shaky start last time out as he gave up four earned runs and issued three walks in 6.2 innings in a 5-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Mejia has been pretty shaky at home for much of this season. He’s got a 5.62 ERA in eight home games compared to just a 2.31 ERA in five on the road, and has given up 17 earned runs in his last 21 innings at home. The Twins are 3-5 in those eight home starts.

Writer’s Prediction

The Yankees offense bounces back to take the series opener against the Twins.
