Betting on the North Texas Mean Green (9-3 Overall / 5-3 Conference)

The Mean Green are looking to finish their 2018 campaign with a bowl win, which they failed to do so last year when they lost to the Troy Trojans at the RL-Carriers New Orleans Bowl. North Texans will be bringing with it into the New Mexico Bowl a robust offense that the Mean Green rode all the way into achieving a 9-3 (5-3 in the conference) record. In their most recent outing, the Mean Green defeated the UTSA Roadrunners, 24-21. North Texas quarterback Mason Fine blew up for 320 passing yards and two touchdowns against an interception on 26-of-36 completions. On the season, Fine has passed for 3,734 yards with 27 touchdowns and only five interceptions. His 64.6 passing completion percentage is fifth in Conference-USA among qualified players, while his 311.2 passing yards per game average is tops in the conference. However, Texas Mean Green’s air attack may take a hit if top wide receiver Rico Bussey Jr. can’t give it a go. Bussey left the  UTSA game early with an apparent hamstring injury, though, Fine can still turn to the likes of Jalen Guyon and Jaelon Durden, who have a combined total of 1,269 receiving yards and nine touchdown catches.

The under is 9-0 in North Texas’ last nine road games.

Betting on the Utah State Aggies (9-4 Overall / 6-3 Conference)

Mason Fine isn’t the only one with a prolific arm roaming the field in the New Mexico Bowl, as the Aggies also have one in quarterback Jordan Love. Love has been selected this season to join the All-Mountain West second team after throwing for 3,208 yards with 28 touchdowns and only five interceptions. In a sorry 33-24 road loss to No. 25 Boise State Broncos on Nov. 25, Love raided the air with 363 passing yards on 29-of-47 completions with three touchdowns and an interception. Love is a big reason why the Aggies finished the regular season fourth in the nation in scoring with 44.8 points per game and 10th in total yards with 482.3 per contest, but the Aggies’ backfield shouldn’t be overlooked also. They racking up 193.6 rushing yards per game, with the pair of Darwin Thompson and Gerold Bright doing damage on an almost weekly basis. Thompson leads the team with 951 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, while Bright is right behind with 785 rushing yards and eight rushing scores.

Utah State is 8-2 ATS in its last 1o games as the favorite.

Writer’s Prediction

Utah State wins, 31-24.
