Betting on the Northwestern Wildcats (+21.5)
Record: 3-3 Overall / 1-2 Conference
Ryan Hilinski helped answer the prayers of Northwestern for a win last Saturday, as he passed for 267 yards and two touchdowns without an interception on 18/33 completions during a 21-7 home win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Northwestern truly needed that win, especially after the 56-7 annihilation the Wildcats suffered at the hands of the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the road in the game prior. Northwestern’s defense showed marked improvement in the Rutgers win, and while the Wildcats’ stop unit is far from elite, it’s now carrying enough momentum to possibly put up a respectable performance to complement their Hilinksi-led offense in Ann Arbor this coming weekend.
Northwestern will enter Saturday’s game with a 3-1 record against the spread in its last four contests on the road versus Michigan, dating back to 2006.
Betting on the Michigan Wolverines (-21.5)
Record: 6-0 Overall / 3-0 Conference
It’s good for Northwestern that it scored a win just before the Wildcats travel to Ann Arbor, where Michigan will most likely whip them. The Wolverines are still undefeated. The Cornhuskers team that blew out Northwestern? Michigan defeated that Nebraska squad on the road on Oct. 2, 32-29. Then the Wolverines savored a bye week, so they will be facing Northwestern not only at their home stadium and in front of their crowd but also with much fresher legs. Michigan’s rushing attack should operate like a wrecking ball hitting the cardboard house run defense of Northwestern that entered Week 7 as the worst in the Big Ten with 234.8 rushing yards allowed per game. Meanwhile, the Wolverines paces the conference with 246.5 rushing yards per contest.
Michigan is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Michigan wins, 45-14.
