Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners (odds)
Record: 12-3 Overall / 2-1 Conference
The Sooners improved to 3-1 straight up against ranked teams this season after taking down no. 11 Iowa State Cyclones at home last Saturday, 79-66. Before that, Oklahoma fell short of scoring a giant upset victory in an 84-74 loss to no. 1 Baylor Bears in Waco. What makes Oklahoma dangerous is its efficiency on offense. The Sooners, who shot 61.7 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from behind the arc in the Iowa State game, are fourth in the nation with a 58.6 effective field goal percentage. They are also second nationally with a 51.2 field goal percentage. Tanner Groves, a transfer from Eastern Washington, is leading the Sooners with 14.3 points per game on 59.1 percent shooting from the floor this season to go with a 40.4 3-point percentage. He is just one of seven Sooners players who are shooting 36% or better from deep this season.
Oklahoma is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Texas Longhorns (odds)
Record: 12-3 Overall / 2-1 Conference
Texas’ trip to Stillwater last Saturday didn’t turn out well for the team, as the Longhorns lost there to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 64-51. The Longhorns’ offense just didn’t respond to the challenge in that game, as they shot only 39.2 percent from the field and 27.3 percent on their threes. However, Texas’ offense can’t just be dismissed after a bad performance. After all, the Longhorns put up at least 70 points in each of their three games prior to the loss to Oklahoma State. That stretch included Texas’ 74-59 win against the West Virginia Mountaineers and a 70-57 victory at the expense of the Kansas State Wildcats. Moreover, Texas’ defense is one that can handle most opponents. If the Sooners were to struggle with their shooting, it could very well be against Texas, which is 11th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency and fourth in defensive turnover rate.
Texas is 2-0 against the spread in its last two games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Oklahoma wins, 70-66.
