Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (21-36)

Moneyline: -110

The Phillies’ four-game win streak finally came to a crashing end last night in a 14-1 defeat to the Atlanta Braves. The Philly pitching staff got absolutely pounded. Starter Jerad Eickhoff gave up four runs in five innings as he went 0-7 on the season. The bullpen didn’t do much better, though, as Adam Morgan and Luis Garcia combined to cede nine runs.

The Phillies will be hoping to get a much better performance from tonight’s starter, Ben Lively. The 25-year-old rookie was excellent in his first career start on June 3 against the San Francisco Giants. He went seven strong innings and gave up a single run on four hits.

It’ll be hard to expect another start quite as good, so their offense will need to bounce back from last night’s no-show. Odubel Herrera has remained hot, though, as he hit two more doubles last night. He extended his hitting streak to six games and has at least two doubles in four of his last five games. Herrera is 2-of-5 with a home run in his career against Braves starter R.A. Dickey.

Betting on the Atlanta Braves (25-32)

Moneyline: EVEN

The Braves bats came alive last night with an offensive barrage to bounce back from back-to-back losses against the Phillies. Dansby Swanson and Matt Adams both homered, while Nick Markakis had himself a day as he went 3-of-5 with five RBI. They also got a terrific start from Mike Foltynewicz, who went seven scoreless innings.

Expecting the same from tonight’s starter, R.A. Dickey, could be a bit of wishful thinking, though. Dickey (3-4, 5.10 ERA) has given up at least three earned runs in each of his last seven starts and has given up 10 earned runs and 10 walks in his last 10.1 innings.

To Dickey’s credit, he has pitched better at SunTrust Park this season. He’s 2-1 with a 4.71 ERA in six home starts, compared to a 5.59 ERA in five on the road. The Braves have gone 4-2 in those six starts at home.

Writer’s Prediction

The Phillies (-110) pounce on Dickey as they win and take the series, 3-1.
