Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (24-51)
Well, same old same old for the MLB-bottoming Phillies. They dropped yet another game Tuesday night, as they bowed to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-1. It was their 15th loss in 18 games.
The ugly stretch they are in is simply because of their deplorable play offensively and defensively. In that 18-game span, they are only hitting .228 and their pitchers’ collective ERA is around the awful 5.00 mark.
Further, in the said time frame, the team had 10 games each where they only mustered two runs or less and got struck out 10 or more times.
If you’re still willing to give the club some brotherly love, though, there are guys that can help you believe – Freddy Galvis will come in being 10-for-27 in the past week, Aaron Altherr and Odubal Herrera are both batting at .333 in the same span, and Howie Kendrick has eight hits in his last 11 at-bats.
The defense, meanwhile, will have Aaron Nola as the headliner. The third-year pitcher is 4-5 with 4.32 ERA in 10 starts this season. He has struck out 26 batters in his last three and has only given up one run in his last 7.1 innings.
Betting on the Seattle Mariners (39-39)
The Mariners will return from a one-day break and a pair of defeats. The series with the Houston Astros started out in flying colors but ended in a very dim light. After lighting up their division rivals in the opener, 13-3, they could only score four runs in the next two games.
Still, there should be minimal concern when facing up a team like Philly. Also, prior to the skid, they just posted six straight Ws, wherein averaged two homers and 6.8 RBIs per game, along with batting .307.
Nelson Cruz, Ben Gamel, and Danny Valencia will be the Mariners’ three hottest hitters heading into Tuesday – .333 batting average, 23 hits, 13 runs, and 12 RBIs in the last seven days. The latter two are currently day-to-day, but things should be looking a lot better now that they’ve gotten a couple of days rest.
James Paxton is Seattle’s starter on the mound. The lefty started the year with five consecutive victories and an impressive 1.69 ERA. However, it has gone down in his last three starts, as he has given up a total of 24 hits and 15 runs in that span (13 innings).
Writer’s Prediction
The Mariners (+180) should win this one, 6-3.
