Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies
It was a success for Mark Leiter Jr. in his first start of the year, as he led the Phillies to a 6-1 road win in Arizona on June 23. Leiter held the Diamondbacks scoreless in the six innings he spent on the mound, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out five.
Leiter, who has spent most of the year pitching out of the bullpen, has a 3.60 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 13 total appearances thus far on the season.
Leiter is looking to hold his own later tonight in a showdown with Felix Hernandez, who has seen a lot of Howie Kendrick throughout his 12-year career. Kendrick is 22-for-77 (.286) against Hernandez. Kendrick has been hitting well also this month, going 27-for-71 (.380) at the plate this June.
Betting on the Seattle Mariners
Felix Hernandez showed little signs of rust in his first game back from a long absence due to a shoulder injury.
Hernandez gave up two home runs in the 13-3 home win over the Astros on June 23 but looked fine overall, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with six K’s across six innings of action. Having overcome the hard-hitting Astros, Hernandez should be ready to face the Phillies, who are one of the worst hitting clubs in the majors, ranking just 27th in batting average and 29th in runs scored.
Looking to test Leiter’s stuff are Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz, who are batting .263 and .321, respectively, this month while combining for five homers and 33 RBI so far this June.
Writer’s Prediction
