Record: 19-27
The Pirates will look to find some consistency when they take on the mighty Dodgers later tonight. Pittsburgh has alternated wins and losses in its last six games, going 3-3 in that stretch. In their last game, the Pirates lost to the San Diego Padres on the road to finish a three-game series wherein they went 1-2. They will be pinning much of their hopes to hold off Los Angeles on Zach Thompson, who will be making his ninth start of the season. So far this year, Thompson is 5-11 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He is coming off a no-decision in a 10-5 home win over the Colorado Rockie on May 26, surrendering 4 earned runs on 7 hits with 3 strikeouts in a 10-5 victory. Thompson will be hoping for the Pirates’ bats to come alive in this challenging matchup. Ke’BryanHayes could be up for the challenge, as he has gone 7-for-20 with two doubles and a homer in his last five games.
The Pirates are 5-2 in their last 7 games against a team with a right-handed starter.
Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (-1.5)
Record: 33-14 Conference
The Dodgers are on a roll again. After a 1-0 road loss to the Washington Nationals on May 25, the Dodgers immediately put together a four-game win streak by sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks in a road series in which LA outscored the D’backs, 26-8. Toeing the rubber for the Dodgers in Game 1 versus Pittsburgh is Walker Buehler, who’s having a fantastic year. The 27-year-old Buehler is 6-1 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts this season, and the last time he was on the hill, he allowed just two earned runs on six hits in six innings in a 9-4 win over the Nationals on May 25. Not a lot of Dodgers hitters have faced Thompson before, but Freddie Freeman is 2-for-5 all-time against the Pirates starter. As a team, the Dodgers’ offense has been lethal all season long, topping the league in wRC+ (121) and wOBA (.340).
The Dodgers are 8-2 in their last 10 Monday games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Pirates win, 4-3.
