Betting on the Pittsburgh Steelers (-8)
Can the Steelers be stopped? That’s the question on everybody’s lips after Pittsburgh recorded yet another victory on Sunday, a 31-13 conquest of the New York Jets at Heinz Field. With the win, the Steelers improved to 4-1 as they opened up a one-game lead atop the AFC North standings.
Leading the way for the Steelers in this victory was Ben Roethlisberger. He completed 34 of 47 passes against the Jets for 380 yards and four touchdowns. Roethlisberger finished this matchup with an incredible passer rating of 124.4. Wide receiver Sammi Coates was Roethlisberger’s favorite target in this contest, catching six passes for a career-high 139 yards and two scores. Le’Veon Bell also benefited from Big Ben’s stellar play, racking up 154 yards of total offense, including a career-high nine receptions.
The Steelers will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they take on the Miami Dolphins this coming Sunday. For Pittsburgh to extend its winning streak even further, it needs to continue its excellent play on the defensive end. The Steelers are ninth in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing just 18.6 points per game this season. They will be licking their chops at the prospect of facing a Miami side that has struggled mightily on the offensive end this year. The Dolphins are 28th in the NFL in scoring, averaging a measly 17.6 points per contest.
The Steelers are 5-5 SU and 4-4-2 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Miami Dolphins (+8)
Miami’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the Dolphins crashed to their second straight defeat with a humbling 30-17 loss to Tennessee on Sunday. The Dolphins simply had no answer for Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota who threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score. With the loss, the Dolphins are now three games behind the division-leading New England Patriots in the AFC East standings.
Mariota’s monster performance wasn’t a complete surprise, though, considering the Dolphins’ ineffective play on the defensive end this year. The Dolphins are 28th in the NFL in total defense, allowing 401.0 yards per game this season. Compounding the Dolphins’ woes on Sunday was their inability to stop DeMarco Murray. He ran for 121 yards for the Titans, who totaled 235 on the ground. It won’t get any easier for Miami this coming weekend against the Steelers who look like a different ballclub with Le’Veon Bell back in tow. Ever since Bell’s return last week, the Steelers have averaged 37 points and 434.5 total yards per game.
With Roethlisberger (9 TDs the past two games) firing on all cylinders right now, the onus is on Ryan Tannehill to go toe-to-toe with the two-time Super Bowl champion. Tannehill struggled mightily in the loss to the Titans, completing just 12 of 18 passes for 191 yards with two interceptions. It didn’t help matters that Miami’s offensive line didn’t offer him enough protection in that game. Tannehill was sacked a whopping six times on Sunday.
The Dolphins are 4-6 SU and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Pittsburgh (-8) eases past Miami, 34-17.
