Betting on the San Antonio Spurs (40-12)
Welcome back Kawhi Leonard! The reigning Defensive Player of the Year made a triumphant return from a calf injury, scoring 32 points in San Antonio’s 101-93 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night. It was a huge bounce-back victory for the Spurs who suffered a humiliating 89-74 defeat to Memphis a fortnight ago.
Next up for the Spurs in their grueling rodeo trip is a clash with the Detroit Pistons. Gregg Popovich’s men will fancy their chances against Detroit as they have fared extremely well against the Pistons of late. The Spurs have won each of their last four meetings with the Pistons. That being said, they will face a tough test against the Pistons who have won seven of their last eight games at the Palace.
With Kawhi Leonard back in action, though, the Spurs will once again be a tough nut to crack for the Pistons. He has taken his game to the next level, averaging a team-best 25.3 points per game this season. Leonard showed his versatility in the win against the Sixers, shooting 9-of-18 from the field and hitting all 11 of his free throws. With his 32-point explosion against Philadelphia, Leonard now has 16 30-point games this campaign.
Betting on the Detroit Pistons (25-28)
The Detroit Pistons extended their winning streak to two games with a comprehensive 121-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. Six players scored in double figures for the Pistons who moved a half-game clear of the Charlotte Hornets for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They have now won four of their last five games.
Leading the way for Detroit in this game was Andre Drummond. The Pistons big man towered over the Lakers’ frontline, scoring 24 points and grabbing 17 boards to record his 33rd double-double this season. Detroit’s offense was in full flow on Monday, recording season-highs in points in the paint (70) and assists (32).
They will need that same kind of ball movement if they are to beat the mighty Spurs this coming Friday. The Pistons will have their work cut out for them, however, against a San Antonio team that’s second in the NBA in scoring defense, allowing just 98.8 points per game this season. Stan Van Gundy knows fully well the capabilities of the San Antonio D as the Pistons were limited to just 86 points in their first meeting this season.
The Pistons shot horribly from the perimeter in that contest, going 1-of-12 from three-point range in the second half. That Detroit team, however, was still missing the services of Reggie Jackson and Van Gundy hopes that his starting point guard will be the main difference this time around. Jackson has been instrumental in the Pistons’ revival, averaging 16.0 points and a team-best 5.5 assists per game this campaign.
