Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (+2.5)
What in the world is happening to the 49ers? San Francisco crashed to a franchise-record 10th consecutive loss with a heart-breaking 31-24 defeat to Miami on Sunday. The 49ers wasted a brilliant performance by Colin Kaepernick who accounted for 409 total yards and three touchdowns. He came oh-so-close to bringing San Francisco into overtime but his last-gasp run fell two yards short of the goal line as time expired. Kaepernick is the fifth quarterback to have at least 3 TD passes and 100 rushing yards in a game since the merger in 1970.
Things are bound to get tougher for Kaepernick as standing in his way in the next game are the Chicago Bears. The Bears are 10th in the NFL in total defense, allowing just 343.2 yards per game this season. For the Niners to end their losing rut against Chicago, they will need to sort out their fumble issues. San Francisco had their 11th lost fumble of the season in the loss to Miami, tied with San Diego for the most in the NFL. Garrett Celek’s fumble proved to be a costly one for the 49ers as the Dolphins engineered a touchdown off that turnover.
Another thing that the Niners must work on heading into their clash with the Bears is their abysmal defense. No team is allowing more points (31.3 per game) or total yards (424.5 per game) than the 49ers, who are 0-5 on the road this season. The good news for the 49ers is that they will next face a Chicago side that has struggled mightily on the offensive end this year. The Bears are 31st in the NFL in scoring, averaging a measly 16.2 points per game this season.
San Francisco is 1-3-1 ATS on the road this season.
Betting on the Chicago Bears (-2.5)
Things are going from bad to worse for Chicago as it crashed to a heart-breaking 27-21 loss to Tennessee on Sunday. The Bears had no answer for Marcus Mariota who threw for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It was another disappointing defeat for the Bears who have now dropped three games in a row. They are now assured of a losing record for the third consecutive year.
The Bears will look to get their season back on track when they take on the struggling 49ers this coming Sunday. For the Bears to return to the win column, they will need to start addressing their failings on the offensive end. They’re averaging just 15.8 points over their last three games. The onus then is on Matt Barkley to step up his game this coming weekend. Starting in place of the injured Jay Cutler, Barkley directed two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to keep the game close against the Titans. He completed 28 of 54 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns.
Just like his predecessor though, interceptions undermined Barkley’s start. He threw a couple of picks in the loss to the Titans. It didn’t help matters that his receivers kept dropping a ridiculous number of easy catches against Tennessee. They will look to sort that out against a San Francisco defense that surrendered 358 total yards in its recent loss to Miami.
Chicago is 3-2 ATS at home this season.
