Betting on the San Francisco Giants

Giants manager Bruce Bochy is set to give rookie Albert Suarez his first start since July 3 to replace DL-bound Jake Peavy. In that start, the 26-year-old righty went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits in a 5-4 Giants win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA in seven starts for the Giants this season.

Suarez spent the past few weeks in Triple-A Sacramento. He made four appearances from the bullpen prior to getting sent down. He lasted three innings in relief of a struggling Matt Cain on July 21 against the Red Sox. It didn’t go so well for him, as he gave up five earned runs on eight hits in those three innings.

He did throw three innings of relief against the Cubs back in May. That outing went much better, as he lasted three innings and allowed no runs and no hits. Unfortunately, the damage was done by that point and the Giants lost, 8-1.

Betting on the Chicago Cubs

Jon Lester is strengthening his Cy Young candidacy by the start. In eight starts since the All-Star break, he’s gone 5-0 with a 2.01 ERA and has held opponents to a paltry .195 batting average.

He really should have been 6-0 after another quality start in his last time out. He tossed six shutout innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Cubs bats were shut-out for the entire game and had just four hits in a 1-0 loss.

The Cubs bats have been producing ever since they went home after that loss, though. They put up 17 runs in a three-game sweep of the Pirates, and added five more runs in their 5-4 win over the Giants yesterday.

Lester, though, had one of his worst starts of the season against the Giants back in May. He lasted just 2.2 innings, and gave up five runs on six hits in a 5-3 Cubs loss. Lester was previously 3-0 in three career starts against San Francisco with a 1.11 ERA.

Writer’s Prediction

Lester continues his hot streak as the Cubs claim a 6-3 win.
