Betting on the San Francisco Giants

The losing woes continued for the San Francisco Giants, as they were handed their third straight defeat in last night’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4. The Giants have now lost six of their previous nine contests, placing them 5.5 games behind the Cubs for the final NL wild card spot and 4.5 games behind the No.1 spot in their division. They’ll have another opportunity again to get back on track when they send their ace pitcher Madison Bumgarner (16-6, 2.97 ERA) on the mound tonight for Game 2.

[sc:MLB240banner ]Bumgarner has been nothing but spectacular for the Giants this season. The 26-year-old lefty has gone 5-0 with a 1.43 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP in the whole month of August. That stretch includes a 5-0 triumph versus Washington on August 16, during which he logged in nine scoreless innings while garnering a career-best of 14 strikeouts. However, Bumgarner’s had his struggles on the road as he holds an 8-4 record with a dismal 4.17 ERA in over 12 starts.

Backing him up on offense will most likely be Buster Posey, who‘s hitting a team-best .314 thus far this year. Posey definitely likes facing the Dodgers, as he boasts a career .300 batting average with 12 homers and 43 RBIs off them. Also, he is 7-for-21 (.333) lifetime against the Dodgers’ ace Zack Greinke.

Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers

Dominant. That word basically summarizes how Zack Greinke (14-3, 1.61 ERA) has been performing this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His control has been amazing as he’s given up just four total runs over his past four turns, while also adding 28 strikeouts to his name. Los Angeles went 3-1 in that stretch. Greinke now aims for his 15th victory when he gets the nod against the Giants this evening.

Greinke has made winning games look easy most especially at Dodger Stadium, where he boasts a 7-1 mark with a 1.42 ERA, a .82 WHIP and a .191 opponents’ batting average across 14 starts. Furthermore, he’ll be carrying some momentum from his last outing at Cincinnati Thursday night, during which he pitched for seven scoreless innings to pick up the resounding 1-0 triumph. Against the Giants, Greinke is 6-0 and owns a 2.28 ERA through eight career starts.

No matter how good Greinke has been, though, he’ll still need some support to successfully pull out a Dodgers victory. Looking to lead the charge at the plate is the pair of Adrian Gonzalez (.284) and Justin Turner (.294). Gonzalez went 2-for-7 along with three RBIs and a homer in yesterday’s Game 1 win. Turner, meanwhile, is hitting .307 at home on the season and .304 opposite San Francisco throughout his career.

Writer’s Prediction:

The Dodgers (-136) win again, 3-1.
