At Top Bet we’re making sure you’re prepped for March Madness by breaking down the teams that will affect your bracket the most. We’ve looked at favorites like Duke, Florida, and Kansas, and are on to the sleepers – the teams are long shots to win the NCAA Championship – but could nonetheless turn some heads this March. We started with the SMU Mustangs and are on to the VCU Rams.
VCU wreaked havoc on countless March Madness brackets just three years ago as a No. 11 seed. This season, coach Shaka Smart and the Rams are aiming for another Final Four run using their unique brand of basketball.
VCU Rams Preview
Key to Success – Havoc!
[sc:NCAAB240banner ]Head coach Shaka Smart unleashed “Havoc!” upon March Madness back in 2011 and it’s still fuelling VCU’s success this season. Thanks to their patented press defense, the Rams are No. 1 in the country at forcing steals, which have led to more possessions and easy points.
As if the bright lights of the tournament aren’t enough, opposing ball handlers will have to soak up the tremendous pressure the Rams will put them under.
MVP – Briante Weber
Nobody personifies the ethos of “Havoc” quite like Briante Weber. The junior guard is the top thief in the nation with 3.6 steals per game, thanks to his relentless effort and steal-friendly dexterity. Weber also became VCU’s career leader in steals this season, and figures to add to his record during the Madness.
Season Highlight – Rams Knock Down Bilikens
VCU showed that it can be a force in the Big Dance when it defeated conference leader Saint Louis 67-56 to claim easily its biggest win of the season.
Achilles Heel – Shooting
The Rams don’t have any problems taking the ball away from their opponents, but they are having trouble putting it in the basket efficiently after they get it. VCU is shooting just 42% from the field this season to rank 297th in college basketball, and are 314th in two-point field goals at just 45%.
With every point so vital in the tournament, a stretch of cold shooting from the Rams could be the difference between moving on or going home.
Prediction
VCU is overdue for a tournament run after consecutive 3rd round exits. Expect the Rams to wreak havoc all the way to the Sweet 16.
