Betting on the SMU Mustangs

A come-from-behind victory may just be what the SMU Mustangs need to give them some momentum ahead of their Week 3 clash against the TCU Horned Frogs. Down 13-10 heading into the fourth quarter of their Week 2 home game against North Texas, the Mustangs scored three touchdowns in the decisive final frame to walk away as 31-13 victors.

[sc:NCAA240banner ]Quarterback Matt Davis had a fantastic game. He passed for 171 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 125 yards and two more scores to lead SMU. Running back Xavier Jones had 94 yards on 13 carries and wide receiver Courtland Sutton had 65 yards receiving and a score. An ability to score on both pass and run should help SMU dissect TCU’s young, inexperienced defense. But getting past TCU’s defensive unit is easier said than done; the Horned Frogs have allowed just 254 total yards per game this season.

Pressuring TCU’s Heisman contending quarterback Trevone Boykin could also do the Mustangs some good. They have some capable pass rushers in defensive linemen Andrew McCleneghen, Jarvis Pruitt and Justin Lawler, who each have a sack through the first two games of the season.

SMU has lost six of its last seven on the road, going 3-4 against the spread.

Betting on the TCU Horned Frogs

Trevone Boykin

It took them almost half the first quarter to get going, but the TCU Horned Frogs didn’t disappoint in a 70-7 blowout of Stephen F. Austin. Heisman Trophy candidate Trevone Boykin led the way with 285 yards passing and four touchdowns in a little over a half.

Boykin has a pair of trusty receivers who could help him light up SMU’s passing defense which has allowed a total of 551 passing yards and six touchdowns in its first two games. Kolby Listenbee caught six passes for 142 yards and a score, including a 51-yarder. Josh Doctson had 81 yards on four receptions.

The Horned Frogs’ running-back-by-committee was also on point, rushing for 224 yards with 11 runners. Trevorris Johnson led the way with 71 yards on nine carries, while Colten Christensen (one), Kyle Hicks (one) and Aaron Green (two) all scored on the ground. TCU should have a big day on the ground, especially considering the Mustangs allowed 300 rushing yards on 37 carries against a ranked team (Baylor) in the season opener.

The Horned Frogs have won their last nine home games, going a perfect 9-0 ATS.
