Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (22-20)

Moneyline: +150

As expected, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers put on a fantastic pitching performance from their respective ends this Tuesday with St. Louis’ Lance Lynn and Los Angeles’ Clayton Kershaw as the game’s starters.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, eight innings of one-run ball from Lynn wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-1 loss after 13 innings of play. Nevertheless, they’ll now have an even more intimidating ace on tap for Wednesday night’s clash at Dodger Stadium in Mike Leake (4-2, 2.03 ERA), who currently leads the National League in ERA and WHIP (0.99).

That goes without saying that St. Louis has a few hitters on a roll to bounce back from the three-game, series-opening defeat. Both Aledmys Diaz and Jed Gyorko have 12 hits apiece over the last 10 games, with Diaz knocking in three doubles; one of which came from Tuesday’s game. Even better, Catcher Yadier Molina further extended his hit streak to 12 games.

We shouldn’t count the Cards out in their current six-game West Coast trip just yet. They’ve actually won nine-straight road games prior to Tuesday’s loss, with Leake coming away with two winning decisions during that span.

Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (27-19)

Moneyline: -170

What a timely comeback it was for second baseman Logan Forsythe, who drove in the winning run in the 13th inning of Tuesday’s contest with a timely double to give the Los Angeles Dodgers their fifth win in six games.

Sadly, the Dodgers might have a case of addition-by-subtraction at hand. Centerfielder Joc Pederson left in the 10th inning of Tuesday’s game after colliding with teammate Yasiel Puig’s elbow chasing after a flyball. While Puig returned to the field in the following inning, Pederson was ruled out for the remainder of the contest. The team claims that Pederson has a sprained neck, leaving his status this Wednesday up in the air.

Still, Los Angeles has Rich Hill (1-1, 2.77 ERA) penciled-in as the next starter. Hill had over a week to recover from his blistered finger, and has been solid for the season when healthy. Virtually no St. Louis player has had experience going up against the lefty, so the element of surprise is certainly in Hill’s favor.

And let’s not forget that the Dodgers’ offense has been quite impressive this season, currently boasting an MLB-best run differential of plus-65. Not only that, they’ve also won seven of their last eight at home.

Writer’s Prediction

The Cardinals (+150) get even after another tight pitching duel against the Dodgers, 3-2.
