Betting on the Stanford Cardinal (1-1)

Spread: -9.5

The No. 19 Stanford Cardinal were downright outmatched by conference rivals the No. 6 USC Trojans last Saturday, getting blown out by a score of 42-24.

The Cardinal simply couldn’t keep up with the Trojans’ offense, but there are still a handful of positive takeaways from their loss. Top running back Bryce Love had another productive day on the ground, racking up 160 rushing yards to go with a touchdown on just 17 carries. Quarterback Keller Chryst had a decent outing as well, going 15-of-28 for 172 passing yards and two scores. It was Chryst’s second-straight multi-TD game and he has yet to throw an interception through his first two starts of the year.

In fact, Stanford has not turned the ball over yet this entire season. And although the team’s defense couldn’t stop USC from piling on the points last weekend, that same D still managed to force two turnovers from the Trojans.

A Week 3 game on the road against an unranked opponent should get the Cardinal back on track. They’ve gone 8-2 over their last 10 road games (7-3 ATS), with their two losses during that span coming against Pac-12 schools that were ranked higher than them at the time (USC and Washington).

Betting on the San Diego State Aztecs (2-0)

Spread: +9.5

With a huge 30-20 road win last Saturday against the Arizona State Sun Devils, the San Diego State Aztecs find themselves undefeated after two weeks of play.

The Aztecs have definitely moved on from the departure of last season’s star player Donnel Pumphrey, as senior running back Rashaad Penny is doing an excellent job so far filling in the void left by Pumphrey in the backfield. Penny amassed 353 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Sun Devils, as he found the end zone via the run, pass and special teams.

But as fantastic as Penny’s performance was over the weekend, it’s worth noting that a couple of his scores were met by huge plays; a 95-yard rushing touchdown and a 99-yard kick-off return. There’s no question that the Norwalk native is ripe with talent, but SDSU can’t rely on him to make highlight reel-worthy plays on a constant basis.

As such, the Aztecs need more out of their passing game, and quarterback Christian Chapman must step up at that. Chapman completed just nine of his 18 passes for 73 yards in Saturday’s win, which was a far cry from his 220-passing-yard outing in Week 1 against UC Davis.

Although the Aztecs have the benefit of hosting this Saturday’s clash against Stanford, they haven’t really taken advantage of home field against their opponents from the West Coast. They’re just 2-8 over their last 10 games in Qualcomm Stadium versus Pac-12 programs (3-7 ATS).

Writer’s Prediction

Stanford (-9.5) gets back on the win column with a sound 33-21 victory.
