Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles
Nick Foles deserves our respect. It’s time to stop poking fun at Foles, who may look like Napoleon Dynamite, but is far better at football than Uncle Rico. Foles just dissected the Minnesota Vikings’ top-rated defense in the NFC title game with surgical precision, throwing for 352 yards (2633) with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. The Eagles’ offensive line also showed it’s up to the task by allowing just one sack to Vikings pass rush. The Patriots’ defense is inferior to that of Minnesota, which means Foles should even be better slinging the rock in the Super Bowl. Of course, that’s without factoring the pressure of playing on football’s grandest stage, but if anything, Foles has yet to crack since taking over the starting gig under center for Philly. Defensively, the Eagles will look to contain Tom Brady and company. They seem to be well-equipped of doing that, as the Eagles are second in the regular season with only 17.2 points allowed per game. They will have to be better defending on third downs, however, after letting the Vikings go 6-of-13 on third-down conversions. The Eagles have fully embraced their unlikely underdog role this postseason.
They are 4-1 SU and 4-1 ATS in their last five games as the underdog.
Betting on the New England Patriots
Tom Brady is Tom Brady, and the 40-year-old ageless wonder showed once again why he’s a Hall of Fame lock when he passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions on 29-of-38 completions during the Patriots’ 24-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC title game last Sunday. Having survived the Jaguars’ defense, the Pats will look to overcome another sturdy defense that will be brought by the Eagles in the Super Bowl. On the flipside, the Eagles will have to deal with New England’s offense that ranked second in the regular season with 28.7 points per game. Brady lost his favorite target in tight end Rob Gronkowski in the Jaguars game because of a concussion, but the signal-caller still managed to come up with a stellar performance, particularly in the fourth quarter. The two-week break before the Super Bowl should benefit Gronkowski, who is expected to clear concussion protocol in time for the big event. Gronk is going to be a big asset against the Eagles, who are only 17th in the league in defense against tight ends per DVOA. The Patriots are 9-1 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 postseason games dating back to 2010.
Writer’s Prediction:
New England wins, 31-24.
