Betting on the Tampa Bay Rays (53-50)
The Rays are back to their losing ways after dropping last night’s series opener, 6-5. The bullpen wasted a strong start from ace Chris Archer as they squandered a two-run lead in the final two innings. Tampa Bay is now just 2-6 in its last eight games.
But with Jake Odorizzi on the disabled list, the Rays will be relying on a part of their bullpen in Austin Pruitt, who is set to make his first start of the season. The 27-year-old rookie has made 18 appearances this season, with just one start.
He made that start back in April against the Baltimore Orioles. He lasted just three innings and gave up just one hit with no earned runs. His relief appearances have not been more mixed, though. He has a poor 6.25 ERA on the season.
Betting on the New York Yankees (54-46)
The Yankees’ recent hot streak continues as they rallied to a win last night against the Rays. That’s New York’s fourth straight win and sixth in their last seven games as they’ve cut the Boston Red Sox’s lead in the AL East to a half-game.
However, that win streak could be in danger with Masahiro Tanaka set to take the mound. The Japanese righty has been wildly inconsistent this season, as evidenced by his 7-9 record and 5.37 ERA. His last three starts have been particularly concerning. He has a 6.00 ERA in those three games, all of which the Yankees lost.
Tanaka has been particularly troubled by the Rays this season. In two starts against them, Tanaka has given up 13 earned runs in just 5.2 innings, a hideous 20.65 ERA. The Rays are also hitting a sizzling .515 against them.
