Betting on the Tampa Bay Rays (53-52)
On the verge of getting swept by the Yankees in this four-game series at the Bronx that ends today, the Rays look for righty Jacob Faria to handle the Yankees’ explosive offense.
Tampa Bay has been outscored through three games of the series, 14-10, including their 5-4 loss to the Yankees on Saturday. Faria went 7.1 innings long in his last start, Faria allowed just three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in a 5-4 home win over the Baltimore Orioles on Jul. 25. On the season, Faria is 5-1 with a 2.67 ERA in just nine starts.
What Faria would like to see later today is his teammates making things happen at the plate. Evan Longoria is 8-for-28 with a pair of home runs in his last seven games. Steven Souza, meanwhile, is 6-for-24 with two blasts also in his past seven games.
Betting on the New York Yankees (56-46)
A wicked six-game win streak has the Yankees surging to the top of the American League East division, overtaking the Boston Red Sox in the process. The Yankees now eye extending their winning ways to seven games, as they try to complete a series sweep of the Rays today.
The Yankees will have Jordan Montgomery on the mound for the series-ender. Montgomery (7-5, 3.92 ERA) flirted with history the last time he took a mound, maintaining a no-hitter up to the sixth inning of a 4-2 home win over the Cincinnati Reds on Jul. 25. The lefty surrendered just an earned run on two hits and struck out six Reds in 6.2 innings. He’ll be a tough one for Tampa Bay hitters, considering that Montgomery is 4-1 with a 3.46 ERA in nine starts thus far this year.
As for the offense, the Yankees have the likes of Chase Headley and Brett Gardner to give Faria some trouble. Headley is 8-for-19 in his last six games, while Gardner is 9-for-24 with three homers during the same stretch.
