Betting on the TCU Horned Frogs (+3)
Record: 3-3 Overall / 3-3 Conference
The Horned Frogs notched their second win a row — and third of the season — after downing the Texas Tech Red Raiders at home last Saturday, 34-18. Prior to that, TCU defeated the Baylor Bears in Waco on Oct. 31, 33-23. Quarterback Max Duggan did not have a good day throwing the ball, as he only had 73 passing yards on 11-of-23 completions and was also intercepted once. But it was the complete opposite for him on the ground, as he led the Horned Frogs rushing attack that came up with 270 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Duggan led the team with 154 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries. Duggan, however, can’t just expect to run over West Virginia’s defense when his passes are not connecting to the receivers. He will have to establish a balanced offensive attack, as the Mountaineers are quite good against the run. Speaking of defense, TCU’s stop unit was dominant in the win over Texas Tech, as the Horned Frogs made the Red Raiders have six three-and-outs while also sacking TTU quarterback Henry Colombi three times.
TCU is 4-2 against the spread in its last six games overall.
Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (-3)
Record: 4-3 Overall / 3-3 Conference
Although they lost to the Texas Longhorns on the road, 17-13, on Saturday, the Mountaineers still deserve a pat on the back, especially their defense. Up against one of the highest-scoring teams in the nation that entered the game ninth in scoring (44.3 points/game) and 23rd in total offense (449.5 total yards/game), the Mountaineers were able to cut a big chunk from those averages with a great job by their stop unit. West Virginia kept Sam Ehlinger in check, which is a moral victory on its own for the Mountaineers. Given Duggan’s struggles in passing the ball and the offensive line woes of TCU in terms of pass protection, it looks like the Mountaineers will be ready to choke the Horned Frogs’ offense. The Horned Frogs have given up 19 sacks on the season, second-most in the Big 12. That’s a tasty number for the Mountaineers defense that woke up on Saturday 16th in the nation in defensive sack percentage (9.76) and sixth nationally against the pass, with only 163.2 passing yards allowed per game.
West Virginia is 3-0-1 against the spread in its last four games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
West Virginia wins, 29-20.
