Betting on the Tennessee Titans

So near yet so far. That’s surely the feeling right now inside the Titans camp after they blew another late-game lead in a heart-breaking 27-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last night. It was their first loss in a Monday Night Football game since 2007.

[sc:NFL240banner ]What made this a bitter pill to swallow for the Titans is the fact that they were in control of the game majority of the way. In fact, they were up 24-13 heading into the fourth quarter but the Steelers’ resilience proved to be the difference.

What ultimately led to Tennessee’s downfall was their failure to slow down Pittsburgh’s running game, in particular Le’Veon Bell. The 22-year-old was unstoppable on the ground, rushing for 204 yards on 33 carries to become the first player to cross the 200-rushing yard mark in a single game this season.

The Steelers’ success on the ground enabled them to control possession for almost two-thirds of the game (39:49). That was not surprising considering Tennessee is third-worst in the NFL in ball possession with the Titans controlling the football for just 27 minutes per game this season.

The good news for the Titans is that the Eagles control the football for just 26 minutes and 57 seconds per game this season, the second-worst mark in the NFL.

The Eagles compensate for possession with their offense, however, as the Eagles are fourth in the NFL in the total offense department with a 406.8 YPG clip. Majority of those numbers, though, came with Nick Foles as their starting quarterback. With Foles out, though, the Titans have a grand opportunity to create a huge upset.

In order for them to do so, the Titans need to pressure Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez to committing errors. The Titans have been impressive with their pass-rush, ranking sixth in the NFL in sacks with 30 already this season.

The Titans are 2-3 ATS on the road this season.

Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles

Mark Sanchez

So much for that love fest with Mark Sanchez. After a spectacular debut for the Eagles last week (332 yards, two touchdowns), the 28-year-old was sent crashing back to earth by the Packers on Sunday as he produced a performance that was reminiscent of his stint with the New York Jets the past couple of seasons.

Sanchez struggled mightily in the game against Green Bay, completing just 26 of 44 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. One of those picks resulted into a 52-yard touchdown return by Julius Peppers. Sanchez also fumbled three times, losing two of them including one which was returned for another score.

It’s back to the drawing board for Chip Kelly who suffered his worst defeat as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though Nick Foles has been given the go-signal to work out with the club, he is still three to four weeks away from making a return. Whether they like it or not, they will need to keep faith with Sanchez.

The good news for the Eagles is that their next game comes against the struggling Titans who have won just two games this season. The Titans have shown signs of improvement, though, with rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger slowly finding his feet as the club’s new starter.

He was solid in the Titans’ 27-24 loss to the Steelers, completing 15 of 24 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns to help the Titans cover as seven-point underdogs. The onus then is on the Eagles’ defense to produce a performance that is worthy of their billing as the best team in the NFC East.

The Eagles’ defense had no answer for Aaron Rodgers in their last game as the Packers recorded a total of 475 yards in the 53-20 massacre. Fortunately for them, the Titans are not in the same class offensively as the Packers. The Titans are third-worst in the league in scoring with just 16.8 PPG this season.

The Eagles are 4-1 ATS at home this season.

Writer’s Prediction

The Eagles (-11) crush the Titans, 35-14.
