Betting on the Texas Longhorns 4-4 (+7)
The Texas Longhorns are looking to end up on the positive side of their current .500 record. They have dropped five of their last eight road games, with QB Sam Ehlinger completing just over 55% of his passes for a total of 1,419 yards, six TDs and four interceptions. Teammates Collin Johnson and Reggie Hemphill-Mapps have a combined 894 receiving yards and one TD while Lil’Jordan Humphrey has logged 22 receptions. On the ground, the Longhorns are averaging just under 154 yards per game, with Chris Warren leading the way with 310 yards and five TDs. On the defensive end, the Longhorns are allowing 21 points and just over 370 yards per game, including 76 tackles from Malik Jefferson, three sacks from Bracken Hager, and six interceptions by DeShon Elliott.
In a 38-7 shellacking of Baylor, Texas limited the Bears to 249 yards of total offense–3.3 yards per play. DeShon Elliot set the tone early by intercepting Baylor quarterback Zach Smith and returning it 43 yards for a touchdown in the first minute of the game.
As such, the Longhorns never trailed at any point. It was Elliot’s nation-leading sixth interception of the season and the second he returned for a score. Texas forced Baylor into a 4-for-18 performance in third-down situations and a 1-for-5 effort on fourth downs.
Betting on the TCU Horned Frogs 7-1 (-7)
The TCU Horned Frogs will be trying to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they host the Texas Longhorns at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday night. TCU had been 7-0 before falling at Iowa State this past weekend.
Prior to last week, TCU quarterback Kenny Hill had his team undefeated an in position to be part of the top four in the committee’s first College Football Rankings–which come out on Tuesday. Hill had 15 touchdowns compared to only three interceptions after being picked off 13 times in 2016. But the inconsistency suddenly returned in a 14-7 upset loss to Iowa State. Hill completed only 12 of 25 passes for 135 yards and he turned the ball over three times (two interceptions, one fumble).
On the Horned Frogs’ second possession of the second half, Hill threw a pass between two unsuspecting receivers and was picked off inside the Cyclones’ 10-yard line. He fumbled inside ISU’s five-yard line in the fourth quarter.
Writer’s Prediction
With quarterback Sam Ehlinger out, Shane Buechele filled it decently against Baylor. He was 27-for-34 with 256 yards and one interception. The running game helped him out, as Toneil Carter and Daniel Young scored fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns of 19 and 31 yards, respectively. The Longhorns are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven overall, 4-1 ATS in their last five on the road Pick: Texas (+7)
