Betting on the USMNT (-525)
The USMNT picked up a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their opening group game against Panama. Despite not playing their best, it was a fair result for the Americans considering it’s the fourth straight draw Panama has held the US.
The good news for the US was that striker Dom Dwyer made it two goals in his first two international appearances. However, the team as a whole was unable to create too many chances against a resolute Panama defense. The US had 12 shots, but only four were on target as opposed to Panama’s six.
The less impressive Martinique defense should be a bit easier to play against, though. The US should play with more sense of urgency as they go in search of their first win of the competition.
The US won its lone meeting against Martinique, which came all the way back in the 2003 Gold Cup.
Betting on Martinique (+800)
Martinique got its Gold Cup campaign off to a very impressive start as they scored a 2-0 win over Nicaragua. Kevin Parsemain, the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, added to his record tally by heading home a corner from Johan Audel. Audel also supplied their second goal, which came courtesy of Steeven Langil.
Obviously, though, they will experience a significant step up in quality when they take on the USMNT. Les Matinino haven’t faced top competition for some time now. Their toughest tests were likely against Panama and Mexico during their last Gold Cup appearance in 2013. They lost both matches.
Martinique most likely won’t be able to enjoy the attacking freedom they had against Nicaragua, where they had 19 shots overall and 11 shots on goal. Instead, they will likely look to sit back and dare the US attack to break them down.
Writer’s Prediction
The USMNT (-525) pick up their first win of the tournament as they beat Martinique, 2-0.
