USA will head to its crunch clash with Paraguay with momentum on its side after recording a resounding 4-0 victory against Costa Rica on Tuesday. It was a huge bounce-back win for the Americans who climbed into second place in Group A with three points to their name.
The Americans’ victory wouldn’t be possible without the heroics of Clint Dempsey. He had a goal and two assists in the win against Costa Rica. It was a historic night for Dempsey who nabbed his 50th international goal. He’s inching ever closer to the record for goals scored by a U.S. men’s national team player, set by Landon Donovan with 57 goals.Dempsey wasn’t the only American who impressed in that Costa Rica game. Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi each scored a goal for the USA in front of a packed crowd of 39,642 in Chicago. They are expected to carry the offensive cudgels for the United States once again when they take on Paraguay in their final group game this coming Saturday.
A draw in this match should be enough for the Americans to see them through to the knock-out phase. For USA to grab that result against Paraguay, it needs to do a much better job in maintaining ball possession. The Americans only had 40.8 percent of the ball in their win against Costa Rica. They will take comfort in the fact, however, that they created the better chances in that match. They outshot the Costa Ricans in attempts (12-7) and in the shots on target department (5-2).
The Americans are 5-0-1 in their last six matches. They are pegged at -147 to score first in this match.
Betting on Paraguay (+225)
Paraguay crashed to the bottom of the Group of Death with a 2-1 defeat to Colombia on Tuesday. The Los Guaraníes had no answer for James Rodriguez who was involved in both of the Colombians’ goals. The 24-year-old scored a goal and set up another as Colombia clinched their place in the Copa America quarterfinals.
That performance will give Los Guaraníes the belief that they can grab all three points in their next match against the United States. For Paraguay to stop USA’s world-class attack, it needs to control the midfield battle. Paraguay had 56.5 percent of the possession in their match against Colombia. That being said, they will need to be wary of a USA side that loves to go on the counter-attack. The Americans scored four goals even with just limited possession against Costa Rica.
With Paraguay needing a victory this weekend, the pressure is on Dario Lezcano to finally deliver the goods up front. He has yet to open his account in this year’s Copa America tournament. The FC Ingolstadt striker has scored five goals in his international career for the Los Guaraníes.
Paraguay is 1-3-2 in its last six matches. They are pegged at +165 to score first in this match.
