Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (odds)
Record: 11-1 Overall / 6-0 Conference
Villanova is on cruise control. The Wildcats added to their list of victims the Seton Hall Pirates – again – as scored an 80-72 road win at Prudential Center on Jan. 30. That’s the second time Villanova defeated the Pirates and the ninth win in a row by the Wildcats. The only blemish on Villanova’s record came from an 81-73 neutral-location loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies way back in November. After struggling on offense in a win over the Providence Friars, shooting just 38.1 percent from the field, the Wildcats shot 46.3 percent and hit 10 of 22 threes. There isn’t much to worry about Villanova’s offense. It usually gets things done on that end of the floor, as the Wildcats are fourth in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 119.9 points per 100 possessions. What’s even more frustrating for Villanova opponents is that the Wildcats rarely turn the ball over, relatively speaking, as they are averaging just 8.3 errors per game – the best mark in the nation.
Villanova is 4-0 against the spread in its last four road games.
Betting on the St. John’s Red Storm (odds)
Record: 11-7 Overall / 5-6 Conference
St. John’s racked up its fourth win in a row by taking down the Marquette Golden Eagles on the road last Sunday, 75-73. Julian Champagnie led the Red Storm with 22 points with a 4-of-7 line from deep, while three other starters scored in double figures for St. John’s, which is a high-scoring team that averages 79.8 points per game –good for 23rd overall in the nation. St. John’s plays a fast-paced brand of basketball, unlike Villanova which likes a more deliberate pace. The Red Storm are seventh overall with 65.4 field goal attempts per game and is 12th in the nation in adjusted tempo. The Red Storm got 73.8 possessions per 40 minutes. St. John’s is allowing a whopping 77.4 points per game, but its players can be a problem for opposing ball handlers, as the Red Storm are third in the nation with 4.5 steals per game and sixth with an 11.6 steal percentage.
St. John’s is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Villanova wins, 80-70.
