Betting on the Virginia Cavaliers (odds)
Record: 11-2 Overall / 7-0 Conference
Virginia collected its seventh-straight win in ACC play by destroying the Syracuse Orange in Charlottesville on Jan. 25, 81-58. Outside of their two-point win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at home on Jan. 23, no team has yet to make the Cavaliers sweat. Virginia is averaging 73.4 points per game on an ultra-efficient 58.6 effective field goal percentage — fourth-best in the nation. Tony Bennett’s team is also averaging 1.220 points per possession, which is fifth-best overall. Virginia’s 3-point shooting has been a huge weapon for a team and a big reason why the Hoos are able to eat away at their opponents’ morale, apart from their high-pressure pack line defense. The Cavs are shooting 39.6 percent from behind the arc. Virginia just doesn’t have lots of cracks on its game. Aside from averaging just 8.6 turnovers per game, the Cavaliers are committing only 12.5 fouls per contest, both second-best in the nation.
Virginia is 7-2-1 against the spread in their last 10 games at home.
Betting on the Virginia Tech Hokies (odds)
Record: 12-3 Overall / 6-2 Conference
The Hokies are coming off a 62-51 road win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Jan. 27, which was a sweet way for Virginia Tech to rebound from a 78-60 loss away from home to Syracuse on Jan. 23. The Hokies have been playing well since the start of the year, going 4-2 straight up, so far in 2021. They even defeated the Duke Blue Devils at home back on Jan. 12, 74-67. Naheim Alleyne paced the Hokies in the Notre Dame game with 15 points, while Justyne Mutts and Keve Aluma each had 14 points. The real difference-maker for Virginia Tech in that win was its defense that held Notre Dame down to only 35.7 percent shooting from the field. Per KenPom, Virginia Tech has the best defense in the ACC, allowing just 97.5 points per 100 possessions. ACC rivals are also shooting just 31.4 percent from deep against the Hokies. This is a team that is capable of negating at least one of Virginia Tech’s strengths.
Virginia Tech is 5-1 against the spread in its last six games at home.
Writer’s Prediction
Virginia wins, 64-60.
