Today comes Gio Gonzalez’s last chance to get a win this month.  Washington has gone 0-5 in Gonzalez’s five starts so far this May with the lefty going 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA during that stretch.

Gonzalez, who is 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 10 starts on the season, could capitalize on the Giants’ mediocre hitting against southpaws. San Francisco is third worst in the National League in batting average opposite lefties. That gives some sense to the Giants’ 0-3 record in their last three outings against left-handed starters.

Gonzalez could also count on Washington’s offense that is currently tops in the league in runs and batting average. The pair of Daniel Murphy and Jason Werth have solid resume against Giants’ starter Jeff Samardzija. Murphy is 7-for-15 with a home run in his career against Samardzija. Werth, meanwhile, is 7-for-25 with a homer and six RBI in the same matchup.

After a 3-0 loss in the series opener on Monday, the Giants will look to even the series up later tonight.

The burden is mostly on the hands of Jeff Samardzija, who’ll make his first home start in three outings.

The Shark took a road loss on May 25, allowing three earned runs on six hits in seven innings of a 5-1 San Francisco setback at the hands of the Cubs. Thus far this year, Samardzija is just 1-6 with a 4.50 ERA across 10 starts. His lone win came at home, where he owns a 3.95 ERA in four starts at AT&T Park.

While San Francisco has struggled at the plate against lefties, they could use a little bit more patience to break Gonzalez down. Gonzalez is second in the league in walks.

The Giants could also take advantage of the Nationals’ weak bullpen that has the NL-worst ERA.

Justin Ruggiano, who went 2-for-4 in Monday’s loss to the Nationals, is 5-for-17 against Gonzalez. Former National, Denard Span, on the other hand, is 5-for-16 in the matchup.

San Francisco is 7-3 in its last 10 home games against the Nationals.
