Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (17-6)

West Virginia finally got itself back in the win column on Saturday, as the Mountaineers took down Kansas State at home, 89-51. WVU’s win against the Wildcats was thanks in large part to what the Mountaineers do best. West Virginia played smothering defense on the Wildcats, who committed 15 turnovers and shot just 29.8 percent from the field. There were barely easy baskets for Kansas State, as nine of their 14 field goals made in the game came from beyond the arc. This is the kind of defense the Mountaineers will have to show again in Monday’s rematch against Trae Young and the Sooners. WVU defeated the Sooners on Jan. 6, 89-76, with Oklahoma committing 17 turnovers and shooting just 43.1 percent from the field. WVU is 37th in the nation in scoring (80.6 points) and 60th in defense with just 67.8 points allowed per game.

Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners (16-6)

High-scoring guard Trae Young was relatively cold on Saturday, when the Sooners fell at the hands of Texas in Austin, 79-74. Young tallied “only” 19 points on 7-for-22 shooting from the field and 2-for-14 from three-point distance, but a player of Young’s caliber will always be dangerous. We could expect Oklahoma to play a lot tougher on Monday than it did Saturday and in the first meeting with the Mountaineers, considering the fact that the Sooners have gone 14-0 in their last 14 games as the home team. Moreover, the are 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS in their last six home games against West Virginia. Young, who scored 29 points in the previous showdown with the Mountaineers, is averaging 30.3 points and 9.5 assists per game. As at team, the Sooners are tops in the nation with 90.7 points per game, though their defense is very much suspect, as it surrenders 82.1 points a game.

Writer’s Prediction:

Oklahoma wins, 79-77.
