Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (odds)
Record: 13-5 Overall / 6-5 Conference
West Virginia has gone back-to-back wins, beating the Iowa State Cyclones on the road on Feb. 2 (76-72) and the Kansas Jayhawks at home on Feb. 6 (91-79). The Mountaineers’ blistering offense was too much to handle for Kansas, as West Virginia shot 50 percent from the field and hit 11 of 21 3-point attempts. Outside shooting has been fantastic for the Mountaineers of late. In fact, they have made 44.1 percent of their 3-point shots over their last eight games. That stretch includes the Mountaineers’ close 88-87 home win over Texas Tech on Jan. 25 in which they went bonkers from deep. West Virginia went 12 of 19 from behind the arc in that game and shot 57.7 percent overall from the field. Texas Tech’s defense is among the toughest in college basketball, but Miles McBride and company clearly had the confidence to break it down. McBride had 24 points against Texas Tech, while Sean McNeil came off the bench and fired 13 points.
The over is 4-0 in West Virginia’s last four games overall.
Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (odds)
Record: 14-5 Overall / 6-4 Conference
Texas Tech is on a roll itself, having won all its last three games. After defeating the LSU Tigers on the road (76-71), the Red Raiders took down the Oklahoma Sooners (57-52) at home and the Kansas State Wildcats (73-62) in Manhattan. The Red Raiders’ last loss was at the aforementioned showdown with the Mountaineers. One thing the Red Raiders can say about that setback is that it wasn’t because of turnovers. The Red Raiders only had two turnovers against West Virginia. It’s just that their usually stout defense didn’t work in that game. On the season, Texas Tech is 11th in the nation with just 61.7 points allowed per game and 12th with 17.0 opponents’ turnovers per contest. The Red Raiders are going to need a more balanced effort in the rematch against West Virginia. In the first meeting with the Mountaineers, Mac McClung barely got help from his teammates. He scored 30 points, while no other starter had more than nine points.
The under is 7-3 in Texas Tech’s last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Texas Tech wins, 73-70.
