The New Orleans Saints were known as a deadly offensive team last season, while the Jacksonville Jaguars’ success in the 2017 campaign was largely built on the back of their scary good stop unit. With that said, expect a classic meeting of offense and defense this coming Thursday at EverBank Field in Jacksonville.

Betting on the New Orleans Saints (+3)
The Saints will look to begin their preseason campaign on a positive note, but this phase being composed only of glorified practice games should be enough explanation why Drew Brees is likely not going to take a single snap. The job of orchestrating the Saints’ offense this Thursday will be mostly in the hands of the backups, consisted of team newcomer Tom Savage, Taysom Hill, and rookie J.T. Barrett. Savage hasn’t been been that impressive so far in his career to feel comfortable about his backup job. In other words, Hill and Barrett can use these preseason contests as a platform to make their cases for the role. Another rookie in wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith is also looking someone worth keeping an eye on. The opportunity is there for him to secure a significant part on the Saints’ high-flying offense, though, he will have to show his worth with lesser caliber quarterbacks hurling passes at him this Thursday, with Brees not expected to take the field.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (-3)
The Jaguars are poised to have another big year a season after exceeding expectations by reaching the AFC Championship Game. The offense was high octane last season, and the Jags could be even better this year in that department with the offensive line receiving a boost by signing All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell. We may have to wait for the regular season to see Norwell in action, though, so Chris Reed, Josh Walker, Josh Wells, and Kc McDermott will have a heavier workload against the Saints. The Jags’ defense that crippled opposing offense last season returns most of its top talents and even added another fang in the form of Pro Bowl cornerback A.J. Bouye. Rookie linebacker Leon Jacobs, meanwhile, has received praises from Myles Jack this offseason, and he’ll look to show why he he deserves the approval of his teammate. He will be in for an acid test against a well-coached Saints offense.
Writer’s Prediction
New Orleans wins, 24-21.
