2016 NFL Draft Central: Philadelphia Eagles
Round 1: Pick #2 (2nd overall) – QB Carson Wentz – NDSU
NEEDS at QB: With Philadelphia moving up to take the number two pick, it’s clear they have one thing on their minds – a quality QB. Nick Foles was solid but he was dealt. Mark Sanchez wasn’t the worst but he was also dealt. Sam Bradford is still in Eagles colors, but with their latest trade with Cleveland, they’ve shown that they have little faith in the 2010 top pick.
STRENGTHS: With a height of 6’5” and weight of 237 pounds, Wentz has the size of an ideal NFL quarterback. During the Combine, he was able to showcase his ability to make NFL throws. While he’s not exactly a mobile quarterback, Wentz moves well for his size. In his last two seasons for the Bison, Wentz compiled 42 passing touchdowns on 4,762 total yards with 14 interceptions.
Round 3: Pick #16 (79th overall) – OT Shon Coleman – Auburn
NEEDS at OT: The Eagles’ offensive line was so banged up last season, which was a huge reason why their running game took a significant dip. After all the injuries they suffered, beefing up the depth in the O-line will be one of their big priorities in the draft. Finding a possible successor to 34-year-old left tackle Jason Peters would also be nice.
STRENGTHS: Coleman has his troubles in pass blocking, but he’s undoubtedly one of the most polished run blocking linemen in the entire class. With the Eagles picking a potential franchise running back in Ezekiel Elliott, Coleman will be a decent addition to the Philly running game.
Round 5: Pick #14 (153rd overall) – CB Maurice Canady– Virginia
NEEDS at CB: With Byron Maxwell now suiting up in Dolphins teal, the team needs a leader in the secondary. Will it be Canady? We’re not sure. Although, any help for this team is good help at the moment. Their ship is leaking and they need to patch holes fast.
STRENGTHS: Canady has an ideal build for a cornerback. He’s 6’1” and has an arm length that spans over 31 inches. He’s quick on his feet and has a good bounce to go with excellent reflex.
Round Five – Pick #27 (164th overall) – WR Demarcus Robinson – Florida
NEEDS at WR: Nelson Agholor hasn’t lived up to his billing just yet, although is potential is off the hook. Jordan Matthews is still the team’s number one even though his 2015, wasn’t out of this world either. Despite the addition of the inconsistent Rueben Randle, this team needs to add to their WR depth.
STRENGHTS: In 2014, Robinson was one of the best in the college ball. He led all Gator wide outs with 810 yards on 53 catches. His final year with Florida was a little rocky as he battled through drug suspensions. None the less, the potential is endless with this kid. He’s a 6’3 – 200 pounder. What more could you ask for at WR?
Round Six – Pick #13 (188th overall) – DE Anthony Zettel – Penn State
NEEDS at DE: Led by Fletcher Cox, the team has a decent d-line. I emphasize “decent” mind you. The Eagles only managed to tally 37 sacks last season, which was good enough for 17th in the league. They could truly use a skilled addition with some upside.
STRENGHTS: At 6’4 – 227 lbs, you might think Zettel is a slow kid. He can flat out burn you though with an excellent first step. Need more proof, he put up a 4.81 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. For a wide receiver, that’s decent. For a defensive end, that’s insane.
