Reilly Opelka
The good news for Reilly Opelka is that he received entry to the tournament as a special exempt. But the bad news is that he’ll face top seed Feliciano Lopez if he gets past Sergiy Stakhovsky in the first round.
Don’t put anything past the 18-year-old Opelka, though. The young American is flying high after his strong semifinal run in Atlanta. There he defeated No. 3 seed Kevin Anderson and No. 7 seed Donald Young before succumbing to three-time champion John Isner. And with Lopez hardly the strongest hard court player, the top seed could be ripe for a potential upset against the prodigious teen.
Marcel Granollers
Marcel Granollers can be unpredictable sometimes. He has a pair of quarterfinal exits at Monte Carlo and Istanbul along with a win at the Irving Challenger this season. But his most impressive campaign was undoubtedly at the 2016 French Open, where he managed to reach the Round of 16. That was Granollers’ best ever finish at Roland Garros.
Another strong campaign from the 30-year-old Spaniard, who is 14-6 on outdoor hard courts this season, could be in the making at Los Cabos this week.
Rajeev Ram
Rajeev Ram is well outside of the top-100 in the ATP rankings, but his prowess in playing on hard courts makes him an intriguing long shot. He’s won 11 of his 19 matches on that surface. That stretch includes an impressive run at Delray Beach, where he made it all the way to the final round at the expenses of premier stars like Grigor Dmitrov and Bernard Tomic, who is the top favorite to win the Los Cabos crown.
