Betting on the New York Jets (+3)
The New York Jets finally chalked up their first win of the season with a gripping 37-31 come-from-behind victory over Buffalo on Thursday. It was a morale-boosting win for the Jets, who finally snapped their five-game losing streak to the Bills. They will look to sustain the momentum of that huge victory when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a mouth-watering showdown this coming Sunday.
Expected to lead the Jets in that critical matchup is running back Matt Forte. He finished with 100 yards rushing in the win against the Bills. It was a sensational performance by Forte who became the 13th Jets player to score three rushing touchdowns in a single game. He’s averaging 98.0 yards per game on the ground for the Jets this season, tops in the NFL. Forte will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing a Kansas City defensive line that’s allowing 126.0 rushing yards per game this season, sixth-worst in the league.
Also expected to contribute this weekend is the ever-improving Ryan Fitzpatrick. He sliced through the Bills’ secondary for a career-best 374 yards and a touchdown. It was a huge performance by Fitzpatrick who improved to 2-8 against Rex Ryan. The Jets’ offense as a whole was simply phenomenal on Thursday, gaining a total of 493 yards in the win against Buffalo. The Jets had a whopping 28 first downs in that victory.
The Jets are 6-4 SU and 5-3-2 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-3)
The Kansas City Chiefs were sent crashing back to earth on Sunday with a deflating 19-12 loss to the Houston Texans. The Chiefs had an excellent chance to record their second straight victory, but several missed opportunities on the offensive end denied them a 2-0 slate. The Chiefs had no answer for DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller who each nabbed at least 100 receiving yards for the Texans.
For the Chiefs to return to winning ways against the Jets, they will need to do a much better job on their third-down opportunities. They converted just three of their 14 third-down attempts against Houston on Sunday. The onus then is on quarterback Alex Smith to improve on his passing accuracy. He completed just 20 of 37 passes for 186 yards in the loss to the Texans. Smith didn’t record a single touchdown in that defeat, a game in which he was sacked a whopping four times.
It’s important for Kansas City as well to limit their mistakes against New York. The Chiefs fumbled the ball away three times and committed nine penalties for 77 yards in the loss to Houston. They will need to be at their best against a Jets team that’s ranked fourth in the NFL in total offense (416.5 YPG) this season.
The Chiefs are 7-0 SU and 3-4 ATS in their last seven home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chiefs (-3) edge past the Jets, 27-21.
