Betting on the New York Jets (-2.5)

The New York Jets have more reason to celebrate after ending their four-game losing streak on Sunday by defeating the Baltimore Ravens, 24-16. They finally saw major improvements in the key areas of their game that struggled the most this season, particularly the unexpected return to form of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Geno Smith was penciled-in as New York’s starting quarterback on Sunday, but he injured his leg in the second quarter. Fitzpatrick, who has 11 interceptions and just five touchdown passes through seven games, took back his job under center and played his best football of the season thus far. Fitzmagic connected on 19 of his 24 pass attempts for 120 yards and a TD, and most importantly, no picks whatsoever.

Matt Forte also did his job extremely well on the ground that afternoon. He rushed for 101 yards and found the end zone once on 31 carries, and he even became a part of the passing game after being a burden on that aspect for much of the season. Forte hauled in four catches for 54 yards and another score, giving his team another viable passing target in the weeks to come.

Lastly, New York’s passing defense, which has been one of the worst in the NFL entering Week 7, managed to pick off Baltimore’s Joe Flacco twice. Granted, the Ravens had a bunch of starters scratched off from Sunday’s game, but that’s really no different from the Browns’ current situation coming into Week 8 (more on that later).

Nonetheless, we should still be cautious in betting the entire farm on the Jets ahead. They’ve lost four of their last five games on the road (SU/ATS), with the team losing two of those four having scored just a single field goal the entire contest.

Betting on the Cleveland Browns (+2.5)

Another week, another ugly loss for the Cleveland Browns. They just got manhandled by their division rivals in the Cincinnati Bengals, 31-17, all the while bearing even more bad news entering their next bout.

With third-string QB Cody Kessler at the helm, the Browns were already in dire straits. And when Kessler left in the second quarter of Sunday’s game, we were certain that they would remain winless.

Cleveland’s fourth and final QB in its pecking order, Kevin Hogan, was a total conundrum. He only connected on 12 of 24 passes for 100 yards to go with two picks, but he also rushed for a team-high 104 yards and one score on just seven carries. But regardless of how you interpret Hogan’s baffling performance, Cleveland remains an utter mess.

The defense, in particular, had a horrible afternoon trying to contain Cincinnati’s A.J. Green (eight receptions, 169 yards, one TD). That unit gave up a whopping 559 offensive yards to the Bengals, ultimately sending the team to its worst start to a season since 1999 – the year that the Browns re-entered the league as an expansion team.

To make matters worse, the Bengals scored three touchdowns on plays of 40 yards or more. New York’s Brandon Marshall must be foaming at the mouth thinking about what he’ll do to Cleveland in Week 8.

Let’s wrap-up this dismaying discussion about the Browns by stating that they’ve lost eight of their last nine home games (7-1-1 ATS). Heck, their only win during that span was against the lowly 49ers last season, and they’ve also lost their last three meetings against the Jets.

Writer’s Prediction

The Jets (-2.5) keep the Browns winless for the season, 23-12.
