Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-5)
The Tigers’ unbeaten record was almost blemished in their last outing, as they barely edged an upset-seeking NC State on October 15, 24-17. The close overtime win over the Wolfpack was a jolt to the Tigers, who’ll be looking to extend their win streak this season to seven games when they take on division rival, Florida State.
Deshaun Watson threw a pick against NC State but he did pass for 378 yards and a pair of touchdowns on a still efficient 39 of 52 completions.
The ground game was decent despite Wayne Gallman being pulled out early in the game with a concussion. Gallman is the leading rusher of the team with 489 rushing yards and five touchdowns and it’s looking like he’ll be good to go in this Saturday’s showdown with FSU in Tallahassee.
The defense, meanwhile, benefits from the extra week of rest to get it together after underperforming in the NC State game by giving up 397 total yards. Clemson is ninth nationally in defense with 15.3 points given up per game.
Clemson is 4-1 ATS in its last five games.
Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (+5)
Only a total wreckage involving other contenders will help get FSU into the College Football Playoff, but that doesn’t mean the Seminoles wouldn’t treat this coming Saturday’s contest seriously. For one, it would be a nice feeling for the ‘Noles if they became the first team to beat Clemson and put the Tigers’ CFP chances in jeopardy.
Florida State will feed off the momentum it got from back-to-back wins over Miami and Wake Forest. Travis Rudolph was a man possessed against the Demon Deacons, as he recorded a career-best 13 catches to for 238 receiving yards. Dalvin Cook had 115 rushing yards on 25 carries but also lost two fumbles. Overall the Seminoles hurt themselves with four turnovers. That kind of ball security will not help Florida State’s offense get past through Clemson’ stronger defensive unit.
As for their own defense, the Seminoles have to put the pressure on Watson. Not that it’s a groundbreaking game plan, but FSU must have been encouraged by the fact that the Tigers committed four turnovers against NC State.
Florida State is 2-1 ATS in its last three meetings with the Tigers.
