Betting on the Toledo Rockets (-8.5)
There’s still a chance for the Rockets to reach the MAC title game. To that end, they will have to avoid another loss after suffering a shock 31-26 home defeat to Ohio last Thursday.
Toledo tries to recover from its first conference loss this season, as the Rockets travel to Akron for a showdown with the Zips.
Considered as favorites in this matchup, the Rockets will once again lean on the arm of quarterback Logan Woodside, who’s among the best in the nation in his position. Woodside played inspired against Ohio, throwing for 438 yards and three touchdowns with an interception on 32 of 46 passes. Woodside leads the nation in passing touchdowns with 31 and is third overall in passer rating. Toledo might pound the ball to its backfield more often than usual this Wednesday, however, as it looks to take advantage of Akron’s poor run defense that ranks second worst in the conference.
Any success on offense must be preserved by Toledo’s stop unit, which failed to do just that in the loss to Ohio, allowing the Bobcats to gain 512 total yards. On the season, the Rockets are giving up 377.0 total yards per game, sixth in the MAC.
Toledo is 9-1 SU and 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games as a favorite by at least eight points.
Betting on the Akron Zips (+8.5)
Akron has some offensive issues to fix heading into the matchup with the Rockets, as the Zips have recorded fewer than 300 total yards in two of their past three outings. That stretch includes their 41-20 road loss to Buffalo in which they managed just 306 yards of total offense.
Quarterback Thomas Woodson had a bad day at the office, as he went just 18-for-42 for 178 passing yards and a touchdown with an interception. His protection unit didn’t do him any better as he was sacked three times by Buffalo. Toledo’s pass rush is top five in the conference so Woodson is hoping that Akron’s offensive line will step up this Wednesday.
The Zips will also have to keep an eye on Toledo running back Kareem Hunt. It’s easy to overlook the Rockets’ run game given the presence of the explosive arm of Woodson, but Hunt could be seeing lots of touches with Akron’s poor run defense standing his way. The Zips are allowing 228.67 rushing yards per contest.
Despite the recent struggles, Akron’s offense can’t still be underestimated. It is averaging 265.2 passing yards per game, which is 33rd nationally. Woodson remains an able quarterback who could strike anytime Toledo lowers its guard in the matchup.
Akron is 3-0 ATS in the past three meetings with Toledo dating back to 2008.
