Betting on the Maryland Terrapins (+31)
The presence of defensive back William Likely has been dearly missed by the Maryland Terrapins, who have now lost three of their last four games (1-3 ATS) since their unbeaten 4-0 start to the season.
Last week’s setback at Indiana was a glaring verification of this, as the Terps’ supposedly much-improved defense surrendered season-highs in points (42) and total yards (650), including 414 yards rushing, and was also unable to force a turnover. This is probably is one reason why they’re designated as +31 underdogs in this weekend’s clash with No. 2 Michigan.
Maryland’s chances of winning aren’t looking good, especially when you consider how its defense is still trying to move on from the loss of Likely. The offense, though, has regained its consistency, racking up an average of 32.0 points in the past two contests.
That’s mainly thanks to the pair of sophomores in RB Ty Johnson and WR D.J. Moore, who have both caused a lot of stress for opposing clubs this season.
Johnson currently leads the team in yards rushing (624) along with four scores and has rumbled for more than 100 yards in his previous two games. Moore, meanwhile, has found the end zone in each of his last three games. The two, however, are expected to be kept in check by the Wolverines’ nation-best defense (11.6 points allowed per game).
Betting on the Michigan Wolverines (-31)
The No. 2 Michigan Wolverines have bullied their way to an 8-0 start on both sides of the field, collecting nearly 50 points a game and allowing just 231.2 offensive yards allowed per contest this season. These efforts should manifest itself again in a form of a win against their former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin and his 5-3 Terrapins this weekend.
Speaking of which, Maryland’s error-prone quarterback in Perry Hills is going to be welcomed by a barrage of hits and enormous pressure from the Michigan defense, which leads the Big Ten in sacks (27) this year. The Wolverines finished with two sacks in last week’s win over Michigan State despite allowing a season-high 401 offensive yards.
Jabrill Peppers (+450) strengthen his bid for this year’s Heisman Trophy, gathering four tackles, one sack, a three-yard touchdown run and a two-point fumble return at the end of the game versus the Spartans. The do-it-all junior is surely going to provide several headaches to Durkin’s troops.
Michigan is 4-4 ATS this season.
