Where do the Dolphins go from here? While Miami sustained its assault of at least a wild card slot in the AFC with a 26-23 win over Arizona on Sunday, the Dolphins will have to move on without Ryan Tannehill.
Tannehill injured his knee against the Cardinals and reports suggest that he’s no longer going to play this season. That’s a shot in the gut for the Dolphins, who admirably turned their ship after a 1-4 start by winning seven of their next eight assignments, including the one against Arizona.
The starting QB gig is now in the hands of backup Matt Moore, who passed for 47 yards on three of five completions in relief of Tannehill in the Arizona game. The absence of Tannehill means added work for Jay Ajayi and the Dolphins’ backfield that ranks 13th in the league with 109.3 rushing yards per game.
The Jets’ rushing defense is one of the best in the league, but it barely looked that way in the win over San Francisco in Week 14, when Carolos Hyde torched it for 193 yards on the ground.
That said, the Dolphins can still get Moore to throw often, considering that the Jets’ pass defense is just 26th in the league with 223.0 passing yards allowed per game on the season.
Miami is 6-4 SU and 5-4-1 ATS in its last 10 games as the road team in this matchup.
The Jets saved some face on Sunday, as they avoided a loss to the going-nowhere San Francisco squad with a 23-17 overtime victory.
Bilal Powell did most of the heavy lifting for the Jets, rushing for 145 yards and two touchdowns—including the game-winner—on 29 carries. Bryce Petty, meanwhile, passed for 257 yards on 23 of 35 completions with no touchdowns and with an interception. Petty was under constant pressure, as he was sacked six times for a loss of 41 yards.
Powell is expected to carry much of the backfield again next week should Matt Forte fail to give it a go. Forte rushed for just eight yards on three carries against San Francisco before leaving the game with a right knee issue. In any case, the Jets will be looking to exploit Miami’s rushing defense that ranks 30th in the NFL with 133.8 yards allowed per game.
New York is 4-3 ATS in its last seven games overall.
