Betting on the Cleveland Indians (1-0)
Carlo Carrasco missed the entire Cleveland postseason run last year no thanks to a hand injury. He’ll make his first appearance in the majors tonight since September, as he takes on the Rangers.
Before being downed by the injury, Carrasco was able to compile an 11-8 record and a 3.32 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP in 2016. He looked better pitching on the road last season than at home and the Indians are hoping that that trend will show up in Game 2 of the series with Texas. Carrasco was 6-5 with a 2.40 ERA and .209 opponents’ batting average in 12 road starts last year.
As for the offense, the Indians should be a tough bunch for Texas lefty Martin Perez. The Indians hit .268 against southpaws last season and were second in the American League in hits with 440. Cleveland destroyed Perez in his lone start against the Tribe last season, as the lefty gave up six earned runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of a 12-1 Texas loss on Aug. 26.
The Indians are 3-1 in their last four games against lefty starters.
Betting on the Texas Rangers (0-1)
Martin Perez sure likes to take that aforementioned bad start against Cleveland last season. He’ll get the chance to redeem himself later tonight in Game 2 of this series versus the Indians, who beat Texas in Game 1 on Tuesday, 8-5.
Perez is making his first start of the season after going 10-11 and recording a 4.39 ERA last year for the Rangers. Those numbers could’ve likely been better if Perez pitched all his games in Arlington, where he went 8-3 to go with a 3.24 ERA across 18 starts. As a team, the Rangers are 4-2 in their last six at home against Cleveland.
Rougned Odor will be a big threat at the plate tonight for Cleveland following a terrific start to the season. The second baseman smashed two homers and drove in four runs in Tuesday’s loss to the Indians.
Writer’s Prediction
Texas (+150) wins, 5-4.
