Betting on the Oakland Athletics
Jharel Cotton was picked on by Houston in his recent start but he’ll get a chance to rebound facing the less potent bats of Minnesota later today.
Cotton, who is 2-3 with a 5.00 ERA, was blasted for three earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of action by the Astros in a 9-4 road loss on Apr. 28. While Cotton is far from being a reliable starter, he’s shown in a couple of starts this season that he’s capable of churning out gems. He pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just two hits with six K’s in a 2-0 road win over Kansas City on Apr. 10. More recently, Cotton gave up two earned runs on six hits over six innings of a 4-3 home win against Seattle.
Behind Cotton is Oakland’s offense that has been coughing smokes this season. The A’s are batting just .221 and rank second worst in the AL in runs. Jed Lowrie has been a bright spot though, hitting .316 (6-for-19) with a homer in his past five games as of this writing.
Betting on the Minnesota Twins
The sight of Kirk Gibson on the mound isn’t bringing comfort to Minnesota Twins, who are forced to put up with a horror show when it’s the righty’s turn to pitch.
Gibson’s shaky ways was put on display once again in his previous start, when he amassed three earned runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of duty of a 6-4 road win in Kansas City on Apr. 28. Prior to that, Gibson pitched for 2.2 innings but was able to incur six earned runs on eight hits in a 13-4 home loss to Detroit.
Gibson is flirting with a trip to the minor league with the way he’s performing this season, going 0-3 with an 8.06 ERA in four starts so far.
In any case, the Twins have to get their offense going. The pair of Miguel Sano and Brian Dozier are doing most of the heavy lifting at the plate for the Twins. Sano is batting .317 this year with 8 home runs, while Dozier is sitting on a .250 batting average with four homers.
