Betting on the Anaheim Ducks (+1.5)
The Anaheim Ducks are facing elimination on the road after a 3-1 home defeat in Game 5. The Ducks once again didn’t get much from captain Ryan Getzlaf, who has gone pointless in four out of the five games in the series. Ditto Ryan Kesler, who’s having a very quiet series apart from his highly-publicized scraps with Ryan Johansen.
But the more concerning situation for the Ducks surrounds goalie John Gibson, who was taken out early in Game 5 due to a lower-body injury. Jonathan Bernier stepped in, and gave up two goals on 18. With Gibson’s status still up in the air, there’s a good chance Bernier will play at least some part in Game 6.
Bernier made the start in one of the Ducks’ three regular season meetings with the Preds this season. He stopped just 24 of 27 shots, but still got the win, 4-3, in a shootout.
But even though they’re facing an elimination game on the road with a backup goalie, but the Ducks shouldn’t be that fazed. Anaheim is 6-2 on the road in this postseason.
Betting on the Nashville Predators (-1.5)
The Nashville Predators are one win away from their first Stanley Cup berth in franchise history. Despite the absence of star center Ryan Johansen, who missed his first game since being diagnosed with a season-ending thigh injury, a couple of unheralded Preds—Pontus Aberg and Austin Watson—delivered the big goals in their 3-1 Game 5 win.
Meanwhile, goalie Pekka Rinne came up huge once again as he stopped 32 of 33 shots. Rinne has a 1.62 GAA and .942 save percentage, both the best marks in the postseason.
Expect the Bridgestone Arena to be bursting at the seams with their team so close to the final. That raucous atmosphere should make the building even more imposing that it has been in recent games. Nashville is 10-1 in its last 11 playoff home games, and 7-1 in this year’s campaign.
History will also be on the Preds’ side after winning Game 5. NHL teams that win Game 5 of a best-of-seven series tied 2-2 have an all-time series record of 198-54 and are 5-0 in these playoffs.
